How Anki Review Scheduling Works and Where a Remote Fits

Anki works by turning information into flashcards, asking you to recall an answer, and then scheduling the next review based on how well you responded. The software, not any accessory, manages the spaced-repetition schedule. A deck holds cards, cards are generated from notes, and each review ends with an answer choice such as Again, Hard, Good, or Easy. Those choices tell Anki whether the card should return soon or later.

For someone learning how to use Anki flashcards, the important idea is separation: Anki stores the learning material, Anki’s scheduler decides review timing, and optional input devices only send commands to the active app. MODI Anki remote can be part of a review workflow, but it does not create cards or alter Anki’s scheduling logic. Understanding the card system first makes setup decisions easier later, especially across desktop Anki, AnkiMobile, and AnkiDroid. Students evaluating this approach can check Anki study remote for current mode, compatibility, and setup information before changing their review routine.

    Notes

In Anki, a note is the source record that contains your information. A simple vocabulary note might include a front field and a back field. A more detailed note type could include pronunciation, example sentences, images, or several related prompts. Anki uses the note type to generate one or more cards, so editing a note can update every card that depends on that stored information.

This matters because cards are the prompts you actually review, while notes are the structured data behind them. If one note creates a forward card and a reverse card, those cards can have separate review histories even though they came from the same note. That design lets anki flashcard software keep related material organized without forcing every direction, prompt, or answer format into a single card.

    Decks

Decks are containers for cards, usually organized by subject, course, exam, language, or personal project. A deck can help you decide what to study in a session, but the scheduling still happens at the card level. If a card is due today, Anki places it into the review queue according to the deck and scheduling settings available in the app you are using.

A practical deck structure is usually one you can maintain. Too many tiny decks may make browsing feel organized while adding friction to review decisions. One very large deck can work if tags, filtered decks, or search tools provide enough control. The goal is not to create a perfect folder system; it is to keep cards easy to find, review, edit, suspend, or reorganize when your material changes.

    Recall

Anki is built around active recall, which means the card asks you to retrieve an answer before you see it. Instead of rereading a fact, you pause, answer from memory, and then compare your response with the back of the card. The value of the review step comes from that attempt. The software can show prompts, answers, audio, and media, but the judgment still comes from your response.

Spaced repetition is the scheduling layer that follows active recall. Cards you answer successfully are generally placed farther into the future, while cards you miss return sooner. Anki’s exact behavior depends on the app version, deck options, and scheduler settings, so it is better to describe the pattern than promise a fixed interval. The remote, keyboard, touchscreen, or mouse simply selects the answer you intend to give.

    Answers

During review, Anki commonly presents answer buttons such as Again, Hard, Good, and Easy when those buttons are available. Again tells Anki the card was not recalled well enough and should come back sooner. Hard indicates the answer was difficult. Good is the normal successful response for many cards. Easy marks the card as easier than expected, which can move it farther out in the schedule.

Those labels are not grades or moral judgments; they are scheduling signals. The best choice is the one that reflects what happened during recall. If you revealed the answer immediately, guessed incorrectly, or recognized the answer only after seeing a hint, Again may fit. If you recalled the answer but slowly, Hard may fit. Good and Easy are for stronger recalls, with Easy reserved for material that felt unusually simple.

    Syncing

Anki can be used on desktop computers, mobile devices, and through AnkiWeb synchronization. Desktop Anki for Windows, macOS, and Linux is free and open source, and AnkiWeb sync is available without a subscription. AnkiDroid is a free, open-source Android companion. AnkiMobile for iPhone and iPad is a separate paid one-time App Store purchase, so readers should check the current listing for local pricing.

Synchronization is useful when you review on more than one device, but it is still separate from the review decisions themselves. Sync sends your collection state between supported Anki apps and AnkiWeb, including cards, decks, and review progress. Before changing devices often, it is worth understanding which app you are using, whether it belongs to the official Anki ecosystem, and how that app handles controls, preferences, and add-ons.

    Controls

You can review Anki with the controls built into the app: keyboard, mouse, touchscreen, or supported gamepad-style inputs depending on platform. Desktop Anki supports common keyboard actions such as Space or Enter to reveal an answer or choose Good, plus number keys for answer buttons when available. AnkiMobile and AnkiDroid have their own settings for configurable actions, so the available control list depends on the app.

MODI is an independent Bluetooth accessory for supported Anki review workflows, not an official Anki product and not a scheduling engine. In default desktop Keyboard Mode, no Anki add-on is required for preset review inputs. Switch Mode is used for mobile setup and desktop remapping through the optional MODI add-on.
